I’m still in the process of researching Downtempo music more thoroughly. So, in the meantime, I have copied the summary from Wikipedia. Check back soon for updates and don’t forget to look at any relevant blog posts!

“Downtempo (or Downbeat) is a laid-back electronic music style. Often the name chill out music is used to refer to songs demonstrative of the genre, but those names also refer to other styles of music, and downtempo encompasses a wider variety of styles than those terms alone would indicate.

Stylistic origins: dub, hip hop, jazz, funk, soul, drum ‘n’ bass, ambient, bossa nova and pop and is often confused and/or mated with closely-related styles like IDM, trip hop, and acid jazz.
Notable labels: Couch Records (Austria), Eighteenth Street Lounge Music (USA), G-Stone Records (Austria), Klein Records (Austria), Ninja Tune (UK), Pork Recordings (UK), Stereo Deluxe (Germany), Switchstance Recordings (Germany), Tru Thoughts (UK)
Notable artists: Air, Amon Tobin, Bonobo, Boards of Canada, The Dining Rooms, Fila Brazillia, Funki Porcini, Glideascope, Gotan Project, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Jellybass, Peace Orchestra, Röyksopp, Saru, Sofa Surfers, Sundae Club, Thievery Corporation, Tipper, Tosca, Urban Myth Club, Zero 7, dZihan & Kamien
